New Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) to join Mitsubishi Motors’ Canadian lineup in 2026

The market for electrified vehicles continues to grow in Canada, and Mitsubishi Motors has supported that with the Outlander PHEV SUV continuing to be the best-selling plug-in hybrid vehicle in the country.

But starting in summer 2026, there will be another electrified option for Canadians.

Mitsubishi Motor Sales of Canada has announced that it will work with its Alliance partner, Nissan Motor Co. Ltd., to bring a battery electric vehicle (BEV) to market in the United States and Canada. The vehicle will be based on the next-generation Nissan LEAF and will be available starting in summer 2026 at dealer partners across both countries. More details about the vehicle, including naming, design, technical specifications, pricing and on-sale timing will be announced in the future.

“Mitsubishi Motors continues to see positive growth in Canada with a lineup that supports the vehicle preferences of Canadians,” said Kenichi Kawaji, President and CEO of Mitsubishi Motor Sales of Canada. “Our Momentum 2030 business plan set out a path to the future for our dealer partners and this upcoming BEV is an exciting next step in us delivering on that plan.”

The Outlander PHEV was the first plug-in hybrid SUV in the world when it was introduced, and it was the first such vehicle to be offered in Canada when it arrived in Canada in 2018. The vehicle won the Automotive Journalists Association of Canada (AJAC) Mid-sized Utility Vehicle of the Year when the latest generation launched in 2023, and it continues to be the country’s best-selling plug-in hybrid vehicle. But the brand’s history with EVs goes back much further, with Mitsubishi Motors offering the world’s first mass-produced electric vehicle – the i-MiEV – which went on sale in Canada in 2012.

“We believe Canadians today want a mix of powertrain options,” Kawaji said. “Adding a battery electric vehicle to our lineup will deliver a blend of internal combustion engines, plug-in hybrids and electric vehicles, so that our customers have the choice of technology that best suits their needs.”

The Outlander PHEV will continue to be offered in Canada once the new BEV arrives. Mitsubishi Motors has committed to launching a new or refreshed vehicle in Canada every year from 2025 to 2030 as part of its Momentum 2030 product plan.
